Before you begin, ensure your fabric is cut perfectly square at the corners. If you don't have a quilting ruler you can use the square corner of the Mitre Stitch Pro to check the corners. Your seam allowance will need to be double the width of the template you are using. I used the 1" template for this project so left a 2" seam allowance. 

Place the square corner of the Mitre Stitch Pro so it lines up with the edges of the fabric. Use a retractable pencil to mark inside the line cut in the template on the BACK of the fabric. If you don't have a retractable pencil you can use a standard pencil but it will need to be very sharp.

Fold the fabric in half at a 45 degree angle ensuring the edges of the fabric line up. Pin or clip then use a small stitch length to carefully sew along the marked stitch line. Make sure you back stitch at both ends to create a strong stitch. Complete this step on each of the 4 corners.

Now trim off the excess fabric appx 1/4" from the stitch line as shown, and snip off the bottom corner taking care not to cut too close to the stitch line. Complete this step on each of the 4 corners.

Turn out the corners so they are inside out and firmly press open the seams using your finger nail.

Turn the corners right way out and push out the points. If you do not have a point turner, a blunt pencil or similar will help ease out the point. Do not use a sharp object as this may poke through the fabric. When it is lying flat and square press out the full width of the hem with a steam iron.  

Working along one edge at a time, turn under the excess fabric and press in place with an iron. On a larger project you may want to pin or clip in place as you go. 

You can now top stitch your project using a long stitch appx 2mm from the inner edge of the hem.

You should have already basted and quilted before you trim down the backing fabric; this needs to be cut larger than the topper by double the width of the template you are using on each edge. I used the 1/2" template for this project so the backing fabric is cut 1" wider all round.
